If there is one thing that I will remember from this summer, it will be all the excitement surrounding next year’s World Cup. This will be the first World Cup on the African continent and it is expected to pull in a ton of money for the country. You seriously can’t go 500 feet without seeing a poster about the tournament. During commercial breaks on TV, there is almost always an advertisement about the World Cup (usually by Coke, McDonalds, or another big sponsor). In addition to all the new facilities and infrastructure being built, locals are thrilled about the chance to put their country on display for the rest of the world. Everyone is a little bit nervous about whether or not it will bring the expected financial boom, or whether the stadiums will be finished on time (see picture below), but the success of the current Confederation Cup suggests that next summer will run smoothly. After interacting with people all over the country, I get the feeling that South Africans really want to prove that they deserve to host what is arguably the greatest sporting spectacle in the world.
